The centuries-old Sabzikar Cemetery in Ganja is considered a ‘kingdom of tombs’ by the local population due to its large number of tombs. The dignitaries of the city, public figures and representatives of illustrious generations are buried in this cemetery, which has survived from ancient times to the present day. Naming the cemetry ‘Sabzikar’ has its own special history, related to the cultivation of plants in this area at that time. The site is home to 17 tombs, historical relics of local importance that have survived centuries.
The tombs and vaults are known by the names and surnames of the people and generations buried here. All the tombs are built of baked red bricks, typical of Ganja architecture. Although all the tombs are topped with a dome, they differ from each other in the masonry patterns of their window-walls, as well as their domes that are pointed, flat, semi-circular and various other shapes. According to research by historians, there are pre-Islamic monuments in Sabzikar of tombs in the style of a necropolis. These necropolises are related to the ancient Roman and Greco-Hellenic civilisations and are more circular in shape.
