As Azerbaijanis say, honey is a cure for a thousand ailments because honey, a miracle of nature, is a valuable food enjoyed by everyone in every region of Azerbaijan due to its curative properties. Almost every Azerbaijani breakfast table traditionally serves honey with home-churned butter, which is another appetizing speciality. Treat yourself with the unique savour of honey varieties in the north-west region.
Established in 2012, Honey House is a beekeeping complex near the rustic village of Lekit, Gakh region producing organic honey, royal jelly, propolis, pollen and skin-care cream, as well as a variety of equipment used in beekeeping, a popular profession and pastime throughout the region. A wide range of honey-based products are branded ‘Honey House’. Tours, an open-air restaurant with local snacks and masterclasses are also on offer and seminars sometimes take place on specific aspects of apiculture.
As part of its mission to educate future generations of beekeepers, it also stages a range of apicultural workshops and has even organised a small open-air museum demonstrating ancient methods of beekeeping. In particular, you’ll learn about an endangered local beekeeping tradition, which allows to produce Caucasian mountain honey, and you can try the dark honey that results from it. The intensely pleasing aroma of this variety will definitely leave an indelible impression on your taste buds!
