relaxat Baku’s traditional hammams
Hammams in Baku were traditionally places to gather, relax and socialize. Few of the old ones remain, however centrally located Agha Mikayil, Agha Zeynal and Tezebay hammams are still visited by locals. Head to any of these for the essential Azerbaijani hammam experience, which entails completely immersing yourself in warm water, visiting the steam room and an all-over body scrub, which can be particularly relaxing during the cooler months. All hammam procedures should be followed by a tea ceremony with friends.
The Tezebay hammam is one of the most popular places for rest and relaxation in Baku. The Tezebay hammam was built in the 19th century and was completely restored in 2003 based on modern requirements. Turkish, Russian and Finnish hammam, and pool including all types of massage, sac, broom (eucalyptus), pedicure and manicure are fully ready at your service. In this hammam, you can enjoy Eastern and European cuisine in the restaurant, bar, and beer bar.
This hammam is only available to men.
Dating back to the late 19th century, Agha Zeynal Hammam is one of the popular hammams which rekindles a spirit of the past and offers all the traditional treatments in the heart of the Old City. It was built in the second half of the 19th century by Agha Zeynal, the owner of the hammam. Haji Agha Zeynal was the grandfather of Baku millionaire Ramazanov. If you pay attention to the general structure of the hammam, you can see that it is not distinguished from the system as it is included in the system of residential buildings. Adhering to the traditional style, the interior of the building is divided into main sections, consisting of dressing and washing rooms, treasury (hot and cold-water reservoir) and fire chamber.
The hammam is currently for men only.
Located in the Old City and built by Agha Mikayil, a merchant from Shamakhi in the 18th century, Agha Mikayil Hammam is Baku’s oldest functioning hammam which continues to conjure an authentic Eastern experience. It was built on the southwest side of the Icherisheher, one of the main streets, Kichik Gala Street. The area where the hammam is located is still popularly called the Hamamchilar neighbourhood among the locals.
Most interestingly, this hammam appeared in some scenes of the 1956 film of the same name, based on the operetta written by prominent Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli, “O olmasin, bu olsun” (If not this one, that one). Due to this, the hammam is also commonly known as "Mashadi Ibad hammam" after its main character.
The hammam is open for women on the first and fifth days of the week, and for men on other days.
